Kim Jong Un threatens to nuke US and South Korea ahead of US elections

Kim Jong Un has threatened to use nuclear weapons in potential conflicts with South Korea and the U.S. after he accused them of provoking North Korea, as experts warned that the dictator could be ramping up tensions ahead of the U.S. presidential election next month. In a Monday speech at the Kim Jong Un University of National Defense, he said that North Korea 'will without hesitation use all its attack capabilities against its enemies' if they attempt to use armed forces' against North Korea, according to the North's official Korean Central News Agency. 'The use of nuclear weapons is not ruled out in this case,' he said.

Kim added that North Korea’s nuclear response position must be fully enhanced because South Korea and the United States are pushing to beef up their military alliance based on joint nuclear and strategic planning. Since adopting an aggressive nuclear doctrine in 2022, North Korea has repeatedly vowed to use nuclear weapons first if it perceives the leadership in Pyongyang as under threat. But many experts question if North Korea could really do so because its military is outgunned by the US and South Korean forces.

Meanwhile, President Yoon Suk Yeol warned Kim that using nukes would mean the end of his regime because the dictator would face 'the resolute and overwhelming response' of the South Korean-U.S. alliance. Tensions between the two Koreas have been heightened in recent weeks, with Seol last week staging a military parade where it showcased its bunker-busitng 'monster' missile. Fighter jets also flew over Seoul and tanks rolled through the streets.

Meanwhile, North Korea unveiled a facility last week to produce weapons-grade uranium, a nuclear ingredient, and continuing a run of missile tests. Kim also slammed Yoon for 'clamoring' about his country's alliance with the U.S.

It comes as chilling images released yesterday by KCNA showed the communist dictator inspecting live artillery firing by graduates of the O Jin U Artillery Academy - a facility that trains the backbone of North Korea’s artillery force - at an undisclosed location in the country.

As Kim observed the artillery academy cadets carrying out a live-fire drill, he stressed the importance of 'constantly training the guerrilla war tactics to wipe out the enemies through rapid mobile and surprise operations. He also reiterated the country’s willingness to use all available offensive forces, including nuclear weapons, to defend its sovereignty.

Many analysts have observed that North Korea will likely leverage its growing nuclear arsenal for U.S. concessions like sanctions relief after a new U.S. administration is in place.

Since May, North Korea has been dropping balloons filled with waste and trash onto South Korea, reviving a Cold-War style psychological campaign. This morning, South Korean military reported that more balloons were being released across the border.

Vladimir Putin pinpoints one move that will trigger 'nuclear response' from Russia

Vladimir Putin sent a chilling message to the West, warning them that giving into Ukraine's latest demand would lead to a nuclear war. 

Speaking to group of senior officials, the Kremlin leader pledged to change Russia's nuclear doctrine and threatened to use nuclear weapons if it was attacked by any state with conventional weapons, after Donald Trump claimed Ukraine should "give back a little bit." In his strongest remarks yet on possible nuclear strikes, the Russian leader said his military would have a swift "nuclear response" if it detected the start of a massive launch of missiles, aircraft, and drones into its territory, which presented a "critical threat" to the country's sovereignty.

This comes as Ukraine continues to seek approval to use long-range Western missiles against military sites in Russia. The Kremlin chief added that Russia had the right to use nuclear weapons in the case of aggression.

In a direct warning to Western countries backing Ukraine with significant military aid, Putin said Russia would consider an attack from a non-nuclear state that was backed by a nuclear-armed one to be a "joint attack."

The Russian president said his government was considering changing the rules and preconditions around how Russia can use its nuclear arsenal. He described his country's nuclear arms as "the most important guarantee of security of our state and its citizens."

Responding to the Russian remarks, Andriy Yermak, chief of staff for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said Russia "no longer has anything other than nuclear blackmail to intimidate the world".

President Zelensky is set to meet Joe Biden today, where Kyiv's request for using long-range missiles inside Russia is top of the agenda.

He has been asking for months for permission to use British Storm Shadow missiles and US-made ATACMS to hit targets deeper inside Russia.

Kyiv wants to target bases inside Russia which it says are sending missiles into Ukraine, but the US has so far been reluctant to greenlight the move.

In his address to the UN Security Council on Tuesday, President Zelensky claimed he had proof that Russia was plotting to target three Ukrainian nuclear power plants.

In June, Putin warned Europe was "defenseless" against a nuclear strike from Moscow. He said that Russia had "many more [tactical nuclear weapons] than there are on the European continent, even if the United States brings theirs over."

Putin added: "Europe does not have a developed early warning system. In this sense, they are more or less defenseless."

Now, the electronic age is advancing rapidly, transforming the globe so swiftly that its inhabitants sometimes struggle to keep pace with the changes.

Archaeologists Found the Lost ‘Book of the Dead’ Buried in an Egyptian Cemetery

Ancient Egyptians sure knew how to create a burial scene—curated resting places complete with canopic jars holding the organs of the deceased and a Book of the Dead scroll with text meant to help navigate the world beyond the grave.  

One of those scenes was recently located in central Egypt, when archaeologists discovered a New Kingdom cemetery that dates back to more than 3,500 years ago and features mummies, canopic jars, amulets, statues, and a papyrus scroll containing a portion of the Book of the Dead that measures more than 43 feet long.

This scroll is the first complete papyrus found in the Al-Ghuraifa area, and is “characterized by being in good condition,” Mustafa Waziri, secretary general of the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities, said in a translated Arabic statement from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. 

While the cemetery—dating to sometime between 1550 BC to 1070 BC—was significant for the hundreds of archaeological finds and tombs carved into the rock located within its boundaries, the discovery of what could be a copy of the Book of the Dead captured the attention of experts as a truly rare find. But with few details released to the public about the contents of the scroll—believed to be 43 to 49 feet in length—there’s plenty of questions remaining about this particular copy of the traditional Egyptian cultural book. 

These texts—which can differ depending on the writer—first appeared at the start of the New Kingdom around 1550 BC. As a result, locating one in “good condition” from the era isn’t a common occurrence. 

“If it’s that long and well-preserved [then it’s] certainly a great and interesting find,” Lara Weiss, CEO of the Roemer and Pelizaeus Museum in Germany, told Live Science. Foy Scalf, an Egyptologist at The University of Chicago tells Live Science that it’s “very rare” to find a copy in the grave it was originally buried in—although, without photographs and an official publication describing the text, it's hard to verify the details of the find. 

A book more properly translated as “The Chapters/Book of Going Forth By Day” played a key role in ancient Egyptian culture. Any examples of the text give researchers insight into ancient Egyptian religion and beliefs about an afterlife, according to the American Research Center in Egypt. 

“The Book of the Dead reveals central aspects of the ancient Egyptians’ belief system,” the center writes, “and, like many topics in Egyptology, our theories are constantly changing, growing, and adapting with every new translation of this text.” 

While the Book of the Dead may continue to interest researchers—the Egyptian ministry says they expect the scroll to be displayed in the Grand Egyptian Museum—the text wasn’t the only item found in the burial chambers. 

The team located stone and wood coffins containing mummies, more than 25,000 ushabti statues, an untold number of utensils, thousands of stone and wooden amulets, and canopic jars. The engraved and colored wooden coffins—including that of Ta-de-Isa, daughter of Eret Haru, the high priest of Djehuti in Al-Ashmunin—were highlights of the collection. Next to her coffin were two wooden boxes with her canopic vessels, in addition to a complete set of ushabti statues and a statue of the ostrich-like deity, Ptah Sokar.

A religion is a system of faith or worship that influences the way a person thinks about, views, and interacts with the world. A person's religion is often the main source of their ethical and moral beliefs. For many believers, religion is a source of great comfort, perhaps even purpose. Many different religions exist throughout the world. Although religions are often very different from one another in theology and practice, it is arguable that most of them focus upon two near-universal themes: How to behave here on Earth, and what to expect when we die. Most religions teach faith in a higher power, be it one's own spirituality, nature, the God/YHWH/Allah of Christians, Jews, and Muslims, or the Hindu deities Vishnu, Shiva, Ganesha, Shakti, and Surya.

How Many Religions Exist in the World

Determining the exact number of religions worldwide is a daunting, if not impossible task, and for many reasons. Many religions can be difficult to tell apart for those not intimately familiar with their doctrine. Even more importantly, guidelines about what is a truly separate religion and what is simply a denomination (subdivision) are rare, if not nonexistent. To use Christianity as an illustration, the practices and beliefs of a traditional Mennonite church differ greatly from those of a modern Vineyard or Assembly of God church, but both are still considered part of the Christian religion. Conversely, Sikhism is generally considered to be its own unique religion despite claims that the religion is historically rooted in Hinduism.

On a similar, but arguably smaller-scale note, the line between a spiritual, but non-religious experience and an actual religion can be different from person to person—for example, New Age practices, Wicca, and even certain forms of yoga can be considered a religion by some, but not to others. One popular estimate claims there exist some 4000-4300 religions worldwide, but this number is highly disputed. First off, it includes extinct belief systems which are no longer practiced today. Moreover, it counts each of the various denominations in a given religion separately—so Christianity, for example, would not count as one religion, but hundreds: Protestant, Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist, Episcopalian, Assembly of God, Seventh Day Adventist, Mormon, and so on.

World Population by Religion

About 85% of the world's people identify with a religion. The most popular religion is Christianity, followed by an estimated 2.38 billion people worldwide. Islam, which is practiced by more than 1.91 billion people, is second. However, population researchers predict that Islam will have nearly caught up to Christianity by 2050. Other religions measured and projected include Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, adn two umbrella categories. The first is "folk religions", which collects traditional African religions, Chinese folk religions, and both Native American and Australian aboriginal religions. The second is "other religions", a catch-all that tracks smaller faiths such as Shintoism, Taoism, Sikhism, and Jainism. Finally, a significant number of people—nearly 1.2 billion worldwide—remain nonreligious or have Atheist beliefs.

Christianity

The world's largest religion is Christianity, which is practiced by almost 2.4 billion people. Christianity is divided into Eastern and Western theology, and within those divisions, many branches, including Catholicism, Protestantism, and Eastern Orthodoxy. Those branches further divide into the thousands of various denominations known today, including Baptists, Methodists, Lutherans, Seventh-Day Adventists, Mormons, Amish, and more.

In Vatican City and the Pitcairn Islands, 100% of the population is Christian. In several other nations, at least 93% of the population is Christian. Countries whose populations are at least 93% Christian: Vatican City, Pitcairn Islands, American Samoa, Armenia, Barbados, East Timor, El Salvador, Greece, Kiribati, Malta, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Peru, Romania, Samoa, San Marino, Tonga, and Venezuela.

Islam

Islam is the world's second-largest religion. People that practice Islam are known as Muslims. In the Maldives, Mauritania, and Saudi Arabia, 100% of inhabitants practice Islam. In many nations, at least 95% of inhabitants identify as either Sunni or Shi'a Muslim. Countries whose populations are at least 95% Muslim: Maldices, Mauritania, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Algeria, Comoros, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Morocco, Pakistan, Somalia, Sudan, Tunisia, Turkey, and Yemen. There are 50 Muslim-majority countries worldwide.

Hinduism

Hinduism is the third-largest religion globally. Hinduism is considered dharma, or way of life. It originated on the Indian subcontinent and is widely practiced throughout Southeast Asia. The four main denominations are Vaishnavism, Shaivism, Shaktism, and Smartism. Unsurprisingly, India has the largest Hindu population but not the highest percentage of Hindus. There are an estimated 1.093 billion Hindus in India, about 79.8% of the population. Nepal has the second-highest Hindu population at 28.6, an estimated 81.3% of the population. Countries with a large number of Hindus: India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, United States, Malaysia, United Kingdom, and Mauritius.

Buddhism

Buddhism also originated in India and is based on the teachings of Buddha. Buddhists have unique traditions, values, and beliefs, such as reincarnation. About 507 million people practice Buddhism worldwide. China has the largest Buddhist population with 254.7 million, followed by Thailand at 66.1 million, Burma (Myanmar) with 41.44 million, and Japan with 41.38 million. Cambodia has the highest percentage of Buddhists at 97.9%, followed by Thailand at 94.6% and Burma (Myanmar) with 87.9%. Countries with the highest percentage of Buddhists: Cambodia, Thailand, Burma/Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Laos, Mongolia, and Bhutan.

Other Religions

In some nations, traditional Chinese religions, including Confucianism and Taoism, are practiced. This is most frequently seen in the following nations: China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. Ethic and indigenous religions are practiced in many countries. In Guinea-Bissau and Haiti, an estimated 50% of the population follows one of these religions. Other nations where ethnic and indigenous religions are practiced include Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, Benin, Burundi, Cameroon, Cote d'Ivoire, Sudan, and Togo.

Unaffiliated or Atheist

Finally, as mentioned, many people are non-religious or atheist. This is mostly seen in nations including Estonia, the Czech Republic, China, and Japan, where over three-quarters of the population declines to practice a religion. Countries with a high percentage of unaffiliated/atheist citizens: China, Estonia, Czech Republic, Japan, Denmark, France, Hong Kong, Macau, Norway, Sweden, and Vietnam.

The Doomsday Clock continues to inch closer to the apocalypse over climate change and fears of nuclear war. The year 2024 has brought yet another dire warning issued by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. But what is the Doomsday Clock, and how is it read?

To summarize, the clock was developed by scientists in 1947 to track the likelihood of mankind doing something that brings about the end of the world. The development of nuclear weapons and the rapid progression of climate change are two things that have moved the clock's hand closer to midnight, which in this case, marks Armageddon. After the end of the Cold War, the clock was 17 minutes away from midnight, but in recent years, we've gone from counting down the minutes to counting down the seconds. In 2024, the Bulletin left the clock at the same position as last year—90 seconds to midnight.

"Conflict hot spots around the world carry the threat of nuclear escalation, climate change is already causing death and destruction, and disruptive technologies like AI and biological research advance faster than their safeguards," Rachel Bronson, the Bulletin's president and CEO, told Reuters. She clarified that leaving the clock unchanged is "not an indication that the world is stable," considering how disastrously close we already are to midnight. 

Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists

It's been maintained since 1947 by the members of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientistsitself founded in 1945 by Albert Einstein and University of Chicago scientists who helped develop the first atomic weapons in the Manhattan Project.

A metaphor for threats

The clock serves as a metaphor for hazards to our world from unchecked scientific and technical advances using the imagery of apocalypse (midnight) and the contemporary idiom of nuclear explosion (countdown to zero) to convey threats to humanity and the planet.

Who sets the Doomsday Clock?

The clock is set every year by the Bulletin's Science and Security Board. It's original setting in 1947 was seven minutes to midnight. Since then its timeline has been adjusted to reflect the perceived threat from nuclear weapons, climate change, and disruptive technologies in other domains. To turn the clock back is to revisit some of the most frightening and potentially catastrophic episodes in the history of humanity.

1949: 3 minutes to midnight (23h57)

On August 29, 1949, the Soviet Union carried out its first nuclear test, detonating an atomic bomb, the RDS-1, thus officially starting the nuclear arms race.

1953: 2 minutes to midnight (23h58)

The United States tests its first thermonuclear device, in November 1952 at Eniwetok Atoll in the Pacific Proving Ground in the Marshall Islands, as part of Operation Ivy. The USSR responds with a similar test in August 1953. This remained the clock's closest approach to midnight (tied in 2018) until 2020.

1960: 7 minutes to midnight (23h53)

Despite a series of regional conflicts including the Suez Crisis of 1956, the 1958 Second Taiwan Strait Crisis, and the 1958 Lebanon crisis, the clock is put back five minutes in 1960 due in part to increased scientific cooperation and public understanding of the dangers of nuclear weapons.

1963: 12 minutes to midnight (23h48)

The Partial Test Ban Treaty signed by the governments of the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States in Moscow on August 5, 1963 set the clock back to 23h48.

1968: 7 minutes to midnight (23h53)

The clock edges towards midnight again as involvement of the United States in the Vietnam War intensifies. The Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 and the Six-Day War in 1967 are also determining factors. Meanwhile, France and China join the nuclear arms race.

1969: 10 minutes to midnight (23h50)

Every nation in the world, with the notable exceptions of India, Israel, and Pakistan, signs the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. The treaty was negotiated by the Eighteen Nation Committee on Disarmament, a United Nations-sponsored organization based in Geneva, Switzerland. It was signed on July 1, 1968 and became effective on March 5, 1970.

1972: 12 minutes to midnight (23h48)

A wave of renewed optimism sweeps the world as the United States and the Soviet Union sign the first Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT I) and the Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) Treaty. The clock drops back 120 seconds to 12 minutes before midnight as Richard Nixon and Leonid Brezhnev close the deal in Moscow.

Further escalation of the tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union are exemplified with the deployment in Western Europe of Pershing II medium-range ballistic missile and cruise missiles. Meanwhile, the ongoing Soviet–Afghan War only serves to intensify the Cold War. And the Soviet Union announce a boycott of the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles. 

1988: 6 minutes to midnight (23h54)

A thaw in the Cold War sees the clock gain three minutes as Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev sign the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty in Washington, D.C. on December 8, 1987, effective June 1, 1988.

1990: 10 minutes to midnight (23h50)

The fall of the Berlin Wall on November 1990 and the Iron Curtain, along with the reunification of Germany, sees the beginning of the end of the Cold War.

1991: 17 minutes from midnight (23h43) 

The dissolution of the Soviet Union on December 26, 1991 sees the hands of the Doomsday Clock set back 420 seconds to 17 minutes—to date the farthest from midnight the Doomsday Clock has been since its inception.  

1995: 14 minutes to midnight (23h46)

Concerns mount over post-Soviet Union nuclear proliferation of weapons and brainpower. At the same time, and despite the signing of various treaties, global military spending continues at Cold War levels.

1998: 9 minutes from midnight (23h51)

Both India and Pakistan detonate nuclear weapons in underground tests: Pakistan's Chagai-I project takes place at Ras Koh Hills, while the remote Thar Desert region serves as the location for India's Pokhran-II series of detonations.

2002: 7 minutes from midnight (23h53)

The global nuclear disarmament initiative loses momentum and the United States, concerned about the possibility of a nuclear terrorist attack due to the amount of weapon-grade nuclear materials that are unsecured and unaccounted for worldwide, rejects a series of rams controls and treaties.

2007: 5 minutes to midnight (23h55)

The clock edges forward after North Korea tests a nuclear weapon in 2006. At the same time, Iran's nuclear ambitions become cause for concern. And in a sign of the times, after assessing the dangers posed to civilization, climate change is added to the prospect of nuclear annihilation as the greatest threats to humanity.

The Clock edges back 60 seconds after the 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen results in the developing and industrialized countries agreeing to take responsibility for carbon emissions and to limit global temperature rise to 2°C (35.6°F).

2012: 5 minutes to midnight (23h55) 

The lack of global political will to address urgent global climate change issues nudges the clock another minute towards midnight. Of equal concern are nuclear weapons stockpiles, the potential for regional nuclear conflict, and nuclear power safety.

2015: 3 minutes to midnight (23h57)

The apparent inability of governments around the world to tackle global climate change, plus the modernization of nuclear weapons in the United States and Russia, and the problem of nuclear waste, takes another 120 seconds off the clock.

2017: 2.5 minutes to midnight (23h57.30)

US President Donald Trump's alarmist rhetoric over nuclear weapons, the threat of a renewed arms race between the US and Russia, and his administration's refusal to accept scientific consensus over climate change, is enough to shave off another 90 seconds.

2018: 2 minutes to midnight (23h58)

The clock matches its 1958 2-minute warning after the US withdraws from the 2015 Paris Agreement.

2019: 2 minutes to midnight (23h58)

In 2019, the Doomsday Clock remained at 2 minutes to midnight due to unresolved issues involving climate change and because of the threat posed by information warfare such as misuse of AI and synthetic biology, and cyberwarfare.

2020: 100 seconds to midnight (23h58.2)

In 2020, the unit of time was announced in seconds (100) to emphasize "the most dangerous situation that humanity has ever faced," according to the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.

2021/2022: 100 seconds to midnight

In 2021 and 2022, the Bulletin reaffirmed the "100 seconds to midnight" time setting, reiterating the failure of world leaders to deal with the increased threats of nuclear war along with the continued neglect of climate change.

2023: 90 seconds to midnight (23h58.5)

In 2023, the clock was moved 10 seconds closer to midnight, leaving us just 90 seconds away from doomsday. This was in response to Russia's attack on Ukraine and the imminent threat of nuclear war. “We are sending a message that the situation is becoming more urgent,” said Rachel Bronson, President of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists. "Crises are more likely to happen and have broader consequences and longer standing effects.” Other threats to humanity mentioned included "nuclear weapon proliferation in China, Iran increasing its uranium enrichment, missile tests in North Korea, future pandemics from animal diseases, pathogens from lab mistakes, “disruptive technologies,” and worsening climate change."
