Biblical Names & Meanings

The Christian Bible consists of two main sections: the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament encompasses the legends, histories, laws, and prophecies of the ancient Hebrew prophets, written from the 12th to the 2nd century BC. Its primary language is Hebrew, from which most of its names originate.

The New Testament chronicles the ministry of Jesus and his early disciples, and contains several epistles written by John, Paul, and others in the 1st-2nd century AD. Originally composed in Greek, it features a diverse array of Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, and Roman names.

Numerous English translations of the Bible exist. The list of names provided is derived from the Revised English Bible, which utilized the "best available texts of both Testaments," and was informed by two reference works: Nave's Topical Bible and Easton's Bible Dictionary. While primarily consisting of personal names, this list represents only a subset of all biblical names.
